Adopt a Trail Program at Fellows Lake Trails

What is the Adopt-A-Trail Program?

The Adopt-A-Trail program is designed with conservation in mind and good stewardship of ~29 miles of multi-use single-track trail around Fellows Lake. The program focuses on engaging local organizations in partnership with Ozark Greenways and City Utilities to care for and maintain this gift to our community. Adopters are encouraged to choose a segment (or multiple segments) of the trail network that appeals to them, which will become their responsibility to help maintain for a year. There are 24 trail segments available for adoption that range from .3 miles to 3.5 miles in length. Adoptions can be renewed annually provided there are no other groups interested in that segment.

Who may adopt a trail segment?

Anyone interested in trails and the outdoors is invited to help us maintain these trails.  Our adopters include cycling clubs, trail running groups, local businesses, community service organizations, families, or anyone willing to commit their time and energy to a cause that is important to us all.  No prior experience is necessary. We will work with your group to ensure that you have the training and tools that you need to make it a manageable and rewarding experience for all.

What do trail adopters typically do?

Your role in this partnership will be assist Ozark Greenways with the trail care of your segment. The level of assistance varies depending on your comfort level and training. Some adopters have enough experience with trail care to run weed trimmers and other power tools while others help us out by clearing debris from the corridor so that we may run weed trimmers and mowers more efficiently.  There is plenty to do for all skill levels.

Time commitments will vary according to the trail segment and time of the year. During the growing season (April through September) we need all the help we can get to keep the vegetation under control.  If running a weed trimmer is not something you feel comfortable with, then limb lopping, cleaning up deadfall and other trail debris is a great help.  Generally, a monthly visit is more than enough and there may be times when a nice walk with limb loppers is all that is needed.    During the off-season, the frequency will be determined by weather and the needs of your segment.  After storms and other weather events wreak havoc on the trails, a visit to help us clear debris is greatly appreciated.  Other times we may need assistance on a larger project like tread repair.  This is a partnership and we will communicate any needs relating to your segment.

Adopters are not expected to work beyond their comfort level or training. Any skilled or potentially hazardous work such as tree clearing with chainsaws will continue to be the responsibility of our staff.  Our goal is facilitate community involvement for the care of this gift and the more hands the better.

Finally, we ask that you help us document your time and effort. This helps us to show our appreciation for your selfless commitment. It also demonstrates community support for not only this trail network but future endeavors as well.  A simple email to jeff@ozarkgreenways.org with time spent works just fine.

What type of training is involved?

Adopting a trail segment requires no prior experience or training.   All you need is the desire and commitment to make your segment a better place.   We will provide information that overviews the basics of trail maintenance and specific details for your segment.  Adopters will receive field training to teach the skills necessary to use basic hand tools and weed-eating equipment safely and effectively.  Additionally, our staff will always be available to provide continuing guidance and assistance as needed. Click HERE to review the ATA Handbook.

What equipment do I need?

All you need to bring is what keeps you comfortable and safe.  We recommend your protective equipment such as work boots, gloves, eye protection, sunscreen, and bug spray. If you have your hand tools or weed eaters that is a bonus.  Otherwise, we will provide all the tools needed to make it a successful experience for your group.
