Trail Etiquette & Policies

Ozark Greenways trails are shared spaces for walking, running, cycling, and enjoying the outdoors. Every trail user plays a role in creating a safe, welcoming, and enjoyable experience.

Please be courteous, stay aware of others, and help protect the trails we all share.

Trail Etiquette

Trail Hours

  • Trails are open from sunrise to sunset.

Share the Trail

  • Travel on the right-hand side of the trail.
  • Pass on the left and announce your presence before you pass.
  • Ride, walk, and run at a safe speed appropriate for trail conditions and other users.
  • Slow down around curves, bridges, road crossing, and busy areas.
  • Move to single file when approaching others or when the trail becomes congested.
  • Do not block the trail while stopping or gathering.

Cyclists

  • Ride in control at all times.
  • Yield appropriately to pedestrians.
  • Follow posted speed limits where applicable.
  • Helmets are strongly encouraged for all riders and recommended for children.
  • Avoid using trails during unfavorable conditions.

Pedestrians

  • Stay aware of your surroundings.
  • Keep headphones at a volume that allows you to hear approaching trail users.
  • Help children and groups stay to the right side of the trail.

Dogs

  • Keep dogs on leashes and under control.
  • Clean up after your dog.
  • Be courteous when approaching other trail users.

Protect the Trail

  • Stay on designated trails.
  • Respect adjacent private property.
  • Leave natural features and vegetation undisturbed.
  • Avoid using trails during muddy or hazardous conditions.

Electric Bicycle (E-bike) Policy

This policy was adopted by the Ozark Greenways Board on July 22, 2026

Ozark Greenways supports responsible use of electric bicycles where appropriate and recognizes that e-bikes can improve access to outdoor recreation and active transportation for many individuals.

Electric bicycle use shall be based on trail type, user safety, and compatibility with the intended experience of each trail.

All users, including electric bicycle users, are expected to follow trail etiquette, operate responsibly, yield appropriately, and respect other trail users.

Definitions: 

For purposes of this policy, an electric bicycle (e-bike) is a bicycle equipped with fully operable pedals and an electric motor rated at 750 watts or less, consistent with Missouri law. Missouri recognizes three classes of electric bicycles:

  • Class 1 E-bike: Pedal-assist only. Maximum assisted speed of 20 mph.
  • Class 2 E-bike: Pedal-assist and/or throttle-assisted. Maximum assisted speed of 20 mph.
  • Class 3 E-bike: Pedal-assist only. Maximum assisted speed of 28 mph.

Permitted Electric Bicycle Use

Paved/Gravel Greenway Trails
Class 1 and Class 2 electric bicycles are permitted on Ozark Greenways paved greenway trails.
Examples include:

  • Frisco Highline Trail
  • Other designated paved greenway trails managed by Ozark Greenways

Riders must operate at safe speeds, yield appropriately to other trail users, and follow all posted trail regulations.

Natural Surface Trails:
Class 1 electric bicycles are permitted on Ozark Greenways natural surface trails.
Examples include:

  • Fellows Lake Trail System
  • Sac River Mountain Bike Trails

Class 2 and Class 3 electric bicycles are not permitted on natural surface trails unless specifically designated otherwise by Ozark Greenways.

Vehicles Not Permitted

The following vehicles are not permitted on Ozark Greenways trails unless specifically authorized for maintenance, emergency response, or accessibility purposes:

  • Class 3 e-bikes unless specifically designated otherwise by Ozark Greenways.
  • Electric motorcycles (e-motos)
  • Electric dirt bikes
  • Electric pit bikes
  • Any electric vehicle without operable pedals
  • Gas-powered motorcycles
  • Mopeds
  • ATVs
  • UTVs
  • ORVs
  • Any combustion-engine vehicle
  • Horses or equestrian use specifically designated otherwise by Ozark Greenways

Trail-Specific Information

Frisco Highline Trail
Permitted:

  • Class 1 electric bicycles
  • Class 2 electric bicycles

Class 3 electric bicycles are not permitted unless specifically designated otherwise by Ozark Greenways.

Fellows Lake Trail System
Permitted:

  • Class 1 electric bicycles.

Class 2 and Class 3 electric bicycles are not permitted unless specifically designated otherwise by Ozark Greenways.

Sac River Mountain Bike Trails
Permitted:

  • Class 1 electric bicycles.

Class 2 and Class 3 electric bicycles are not permitted unless specifically designated otherwise by Ozark Greenways.

User Expectations

All electric bicycle users are expected to:

  • Ride at a safe and responsible speed based on trail conditions.
  • Yield appropriately to pedestrians and slower trail users.
  • Announce their presence when passing.
  • Maintain control of their bicycle at all times.
  • Follow Ozark Greenways trail etiquette and applicable regulations.

Trail conditions, congestion, visibility, and the presence of other users should always determine appropriate operating speed.

Trail Regulations & Reporting

Springfield-Greene County Park Board ordinances and all applicable local, state, and federal laws apply where applicable.

  • Downed trees
  • Erosion or washouts
  • Damaged trail surfaces
  • Missing or damaged signs
  • Other maintenance concerns
