James River Water Trail

This is not a trail for walking, running or biking — it’s for canoeing, kayaking, fishing, paddleboarding, and wildlife watching! The James River Water Trail is 6-mile route from Joe Crighton Access to Springfield Lake boathouse. The public can rent a canoe, kayak, or paddleboard at the Springfield Lake Boathouse, or bring your own boat and explore from Crighton Access or Southwood Access upstream.

POINTS OF INTEREST: Connection to the James River Greenway & Trail of Honor; Canoes, kayaks, and paddleboards can be rented spring through fall at Lake Springfield Park Boathouse; North Shore Access (417) 891-1550; and Springfield-Greene County Park Board has fun outdoor programs listed at www.parkboard.org

Greenway Etiquette

Bicyclists
  • Yield right of way to pedestrians.
  • Give an audible signal when passing. A bell works great, too!
  • Pass on the LEFT.
  • Control your speed, especially on hills, curves, and in congested areas.
  • Move OFF the trail when stopped.
All Users
  • Keep RIGHT, pass LEFT.
  • Don't block the greenway.
  • Clean up after yourself.
  • Keep pets on a leash at all times. Remove all pet waste immediately.
  • No motorized vehicles allowed on the greenway.

We rely on the enthusiasm and financial support of the community.
