Ozark Greenways Land Trust and American Farmland Trust Working Together to Ensure the Future Health of Soil in Missouri

Category Spotlight On | Posted on January 22, 2024

Ozark Greenways Land Trust is focused on conserving land to protect our natural resources.  We are also working with the American Farmland Trust to promote soil health.

Soil is a living biological system.  Sometimes conventional farming practices that appear right create negative effects over time that harm the soil, the climate, and the environment.  Plowing, in combination with fertilizer and pesticide use, damages soil microbe communities and soil structure.  Extensive tillage, especially when combined with the removal of crop residues, accelerates erosion, steadily degrading the soil resource base.

Regenerative Agriculture principles, a new name for old practices, that improve soil health include minimizing soil disturbance, maximizing soil cover, maximizing biodiversity, and maximizing living roots.
